Curious how new legislation could change the cost of beach access in the Wildwoods and Cape May County?

For generations, summer traditions at Wildwood, North Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, West Wildwood, Diamond Beach and across Cape May County have centered around sand, sun, and surf. And luckily for now all of the beach fun in the Wildwoods is FREE, but that’s not the case with the neighboring municipalities. Beachgoers know that - depending on where you visit - the fun sometimes comes with beach fees or beach badges, especially during the busy summer season. Now, a new piece of legislation - New Jersey Senate Bill S1533 could change who pays those fees and how beach access is managed in shore towns across the state. 

Let’s break down what this bill involves and how it might impact both paid beaches and those beloved free beaches like those in the Wildwoods. 

What Is Senate Bill S1533?

Senate Bill S1533 is a proposal currently moving through the New Jersey Legislature that would update existing laws governing beach access fees. At its core, the bill gives municipalities the option — not a mandate — to waive or reduce beach fees for certain groups of visitors. 

Under current law, most beaches may charge admission fees (often through beach tags or badges), which serve as critical revenue sources for local services like lifeguards, maintenance, beach patrols, erosion control, restrooms, and more. 

But S1533 would allow towns more flexibility in how those fees are applied. Here’s what’s on the table:

🏖️ Reduced or Waived Beach Fees for Teenagers

Beach tag fees currently apply to visitors older than 12 in most shore towns. If S1533 becomes law, municipalities could choose to offer free or reduced‑fee access to teens ages 12–17, a group that today usually pays the same price as adults. 

🇺🇸 Expanded Discounts for Veterans

The bill would also allow towns to offer expanded discounts or waived fees for honorably discharged U.S. military veterans, beyond current eligibility tied to specific service requirements. 

📍 Local Choice, Not Statewide Rules

Importantly, S1533 does not require any town to eliminate beach fees. It simply gives local governments the choice to modify fees as part of their own ordinances. That means one Jersey Shore town might offer free summer access to certain groups, while its neighbor continues with standard paid beach tags. 

How Could This Affect Wildwood & Cape May County Visitors?

Right now, Wildwood, North Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest are known for beaches that are typically free year‑round, attracting families, vacationers, and sun‑seekers from across the state and beyond. 

However, other shore towns in New Jersey require beach tags — daily, weekly, or seasonal badges — even for visitors and residents alike. These fees can range from a few dollars for a day pass to upward of $30–$40 (or more) for a seasonal tag in some communities. 

If S1533 becomes law and local governments adopt optional waivers or discounts:

• Families with teens in paid beach towns could see lower overall beach costs. 
• Military veterans might enjoy broader access to free or discounted badges in participating towns. 
• Visitors to typically free beaches like those in Wildwood wouldn’t see changes — but nearby towns could become more competitive if they choose to alter fee structures. 

Why This Matters for Shore Vacations

Beach fees are more than an entry cost. They’re a significant part of summer travel budgets, especially for families and visitors staying in short‑term rentals or hotels. For many, even a modest reduction - particularly for teens or veterans - could mean more time enjoying the water rather than worrying about the bill. 

Yet because each town decides separately whether or not to act on the bill’s provisions, beachgoers will need to pay attention to local ordinances each season if S1533 becomes law.
