Wildwood Boardwalk's New 1AM Curfew: What it Means for Residents and Visitors

If you've spent a summer evening strolling the iconic Wildwood Boardwalk well past midnight, you already know the energy that fills those planks long after the sun sets. But that late-night scene is officially on the clock. On April 8, 2026, the Wildwood Board of Commissioners introduced Ordinance No. 1350-26, a landmark measure that would close the Wildwood Boardwalk to the public from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., year-round.

As your local real estate resource serving the Wildwoods and all of Cape May County, The Jessica Lees Team is breaking down everything you need to know - because changes like this directly impact your property values, your neighborhood, and your community.

What Is Ordinance No. 1350-26?

Introduced on first reading at the April 8 Board of Commissioners meeting, Ordinance No. 1350-26 establishes formal overnight operating hours for the Wildwood Boardwalk for the first time. The vote for final adoption is scheduled for April 22, 2026.

Under the proposed ordinance, anyone found on the boardwalk between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. would be in violation of city law. Exemptions apply to emergency personnel, authorized city employees, contractors, and vendors performing official duties.

Deputy Mayor and Commissioner of Public Safety Steve Mikulski has been clear about the intent: reduce late-night loitering, curb congestion in the overnight hours, and address the public safety concerns that tend to spike in the early morning. Even John Donio, president of the Wildwood Business Improvement District, acknowledged the business reality - noting that any boardwalk vendor still open at 1 a.m. wasn't exactly doing peak business at that hour anyway.

What This Means for Our Communities

For residents of Wildwood, North Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, West Wildwood, and Diamond Beach, this ordinance represents a shift in how Cape May County's entertainment hub will operate during peak tourism season.

Parking and Accessibility: Overnight congestion near Pacific Avenue, Byrne Plaza, and the boardwalk access points has long been a friction point during summer months. With reduced foot traffic after 1 a.m., parking and accessibility for early-morning visitors, fitness walkers, and fishing enthusiasts should see improvement.

Tourism Impact: The Wildwoods draw millions of visitors to Cape May County each summer. The overnight closure is designed to protect the tourism experience - not diminish it. Businesses and property owners in North Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, and Diamond Beach all benefit when the boardwalk is safer and better managed.

Community Quality of Life: Homeowners and renters throughout Cape May County have voiced concerns about late-night disruption near beach corridors. This ordinance signals that Wildwood is committed to balancing a vibrant summer economy with year-round livability.
